Hawaii News Now reported that the bison that once roamed the pasture along the Hanalei River are now making a new home on Kauai's West Side.
108 bison were transported in a single day, involving a convoy of 17 trucks and trailers to a plateau near Waimea in West Kauai. The bison are now getting used to their new home - 300 acres of Gay and Robinson ag land above Pakala Village, an area once dominated by sugar cane.
There are aims to allow the presence of the bison to help the west side economy. "Our intentions are to get a tour, an ag tour, going," said Ranch Owner, Stuart Wellington. "We want to share this magnificent animal. I mean, they're totally awesome.'
The ranch also wants to increase the size of the herd because of the high demand for their meet.
But, Wellington says he'll let the bison adapt to the new land for the rest of the year before starting up any tours.
