3 Reasons People Love Hanalei

From Beautiful Views to Delicious Dishes, Explore Why People Love This Hidden Gem

Located on the north shore of Kauai, Hanalei is a tiny surfing community surrounded by jade mountains and cream-colored beaches. With a population of less than 500, it’s not on everyone’s radar—but if you’re looking for a scenic beach community with plenty of soul, it should definitely be on yours. Here are three reasons you’re sure to fall in love with Hanalei.

The Bay

Life in Hanalei is inextricably linked to Hanalei Bay. The largest bay on the north shore of Kauai, Hanalei Bay is made up of nearly two miles of sandy white beachfront encircled by mountains. It’s beloved by surfers of all ages (who can often be found waiting for the next big wave), and is also popular with sailboaters, swimmers, and stand up paddle boarders. Whether you’re searching for one of the best surfing spots on the island or just looking for a scenic beach where you can enjoy a picnic lunch, you won’t want to miss out on Hanalei Bay.

The Views

Even on an island known for its natural beauty, Hanalei still manages to stand head and shoulders above many other Kauai communities thanks to its panoramic views. From verdant mountains to taro fields to the foamy waves of the Pacific Ocean, Hanalei offers some of the most pristine and peaceful views around. Whether you want to relax with a good book, take a nap in a hammock, or paint a watercolor of the striking vistas, Hanalei’s gorgeous setting is sure to rejuvenate your soul.

The Food

In Hanalei, many a soul has come for the surfing and the views and stayed in part for the foodie culture. Hanalei is home to plenty of food trucks that serve poke, tacos, açai bowls, and shave ice. For a Hawaiian take on the South’s classic meat and three, try the menu at Trucking Delicious. (Options include sweet and spicy coconut shrimp and shoyu chicken as well as a choice of house-made sides like pickled cucumbers with kimchi and pineapple-spiked macaroni salad.) Wash it all down with their highly popular dragon fruit limeade. You can also try gluten-free Indian dishes at Cafe Turmeric (we recommend the coconut veggie curry) or salads and wraps at Fresh Bite. If you prefer to make your own meal, stop by the Hanalei Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings to pick up exotic local staples like dragon fruit and rambutan.
