Recognizing that there is a daily average of approximately 32,500 cars driving on Kuhio Highway in the region spanning from Wailua River and Coconut Marketplace in a given day, the Department of Transportation will soon be commencing construction to add a 4th driving lane between Kuamo'o Road and the Kapa'a Bypass Road, adding a second southbound lane. The project is estimated to cost about $17 milliion, which is due to be funded 80% by federal funds and 20% by state of Hawaii funds. Expected completion is in the spring of 2023.
A hopeful byproduct of adding the 4th lane is a reduction in traffic congestion between mile markers 5.9 - 6.6, about where the contraflow operations begin going southbound on weekdays. The new lane will pass by the Coco Palms resort, and will include guardrails, sidewalks and curb ramps.
