A Sustainable Luxury Experience at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

Aafke Zietz

One Hotel Hanalei Bay combines luxury accommodations with a mission to help the local community. On the cliffs overlooking Hanalei Bay, the resort used to be the St. Regis Princeville Resort. Taking advantage of Kauai's northern shoreline, the hotel showcases the beauty of nature. Midcentury modern furnishings and vines growing from the walls perfectly complement the place's overall design aesthetic.

The 1 Hotel brand is committed to being eco-sustainable. 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay incorporates this idea of integrating the community with its natural splendor into everything it does. Materials sourced from local and reclaimed sources were used across the property, from walls to ceilings. Its Good Things shop features products from local Kaua'i businesses, and even its linens are sustainably sourced.

How about the rooms? Most of the rooms, even those labeled as mountains, have an ocean view and spacious bedding options. There are many rooms that feature comfortable couches and seating areas, so it feels more like a home than a hotel. In addition, the rooms are all about sustainability. Even the coasters are made from recycled cork and closet hangers are made from 100% recycled paper.

One Kitchen, the property's signature restaurant, takes this sourcing philosophy to its delicious extremes. With beautiful views of Hanalei Bay, you can enjoy the delicious "ono" plates as part of an intimate dining experience. From the appetizers to the main course, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay uses everything locally. A more relaxed alternative to 1 Kitchen, Welina Terrace offers a similar level of culinary excellence. Aside from enjoying delicious Japanese fare, guests can take in views of the coast and listen to local musicians serenade them while they dine on couches. Craft cocktails and great spirits are also hard to ignore on the drink menu.

In addition to the Bamford Wellness Spa, the resort offers an impressive list of activities and wellness opportunities for guests to enjoy. The services here are centered around Hawai'i and its own holistic practices, from coffee rubs infused with kauai coffee grinds to herbal treatments. Every treatment is accompanied by a long, relaxing massage.

The beach fronting the Hotel is called Puʻu Poa Beach and is a semi-secluded oasis with a thriving reef and sand-covered bottom that extends about 50 feet from shore. It isn't technically part of the resort, but it feels like it is, just as the resort feels like a part of the community. It's a great place for families, and especially for kids old enough to surf and snorkel. The resort's main pool is open to children, and it also offers a kids club, called Seedlings, that offers activities like cooking classes and ukulele lessons.

Additionally, the hotel is building a program to allow guests to temporarily adopt dogs from the local SPCA to take them on hikes or to have them stay overnight; 1 Hotels is a pet-friendly hotel, but Hawaii has such elaborate rules about bringing pets into the state that you probably wouldn't want to bring your best friend along for a short visit. Every person on the property, from the concierge to the person helping you set up at the pool, is extremely friendly and happy to share their favorite places.
