The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has stated there will be fewer tropical cyclones expected to form in the central Pacific Ocean region that includes Hawaii during this upcoming hurricane season.
We are expected to see between two and four tropical cyclones in the 2022 season, this could include tropical depressions, tropical storms or hurricanes. The central pacific region sees four or five such storms, in a normal season. The so-called La Nina weather patterns in the Pacific are the reason for the below-normal season this year. The pattern should lead to greater vertical wind shear which makes it more difficult for hurricanes to develop, according to Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
Last year, officials predicted two to five cyclones in the Central Pacific for the 2021 season due to cooler regional sea surface conditions. Only one such storm eventually appeared in our region. The Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1st through November 30th.
