The multi-million dollar federal disbursement, which comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will be used to funnel funds into the Housing Choice Voucher, or HCV, program. Specifically, the grants will fund housing vouchers for families on Kauai and Oahu.
The HCV program helps low-income families, kupuna, and the disabled afford decent, safe and sanitary living accommodations, and around 13,000 households rely on Section 8 housing in the Islands. The new aid will be distributed to housing agencies leasing a lower-than-average percentage of their authorized vouchers due to funding constraints, allowing for more vouchers to be leased. The $4 million in funding includes $2 million for the City and County of Honolulu and $2 million for the Kauai County Housing Agency. We hope this will help more Hawai‘i families find a safe and reliable place to live.
