Hanalei Hill Repairs and North Shore Convoy Update

The 1st phase of emergency repairs are expected to conclude at the end of September, with some additional closures as well as night work. Once this phase is completed both lanes of the highway will reopen for the first time since the March 11, 2021 landslide occurred which cut off regular traffic on Kauai’s North Shore. The emergency repairs included some 545, 40 ft long soil nails, which were installed to anchor a 300 ft wide and 60 ft tall wall to secure the upper slope. On Friday July 30, crews finished up spraying shotcrete on the wall and continued to remove rock and debris. Drain mats and weep poles have been installed at anchors allowing for proper drainage. The 2nd phase of the project is still in the environmental and design phase. This will include installing a mesh and soil nail wall to stabilize the slope below the highway at mile marker 1. As well as the installation of a drainage system to intercept water coming from the 19th-century water tunnel on the hillside. With the stability of this water tunnel being unknown, plans are to install reinforced precast concrete arch sections within 100 feet of it. The emergency and permanent repairs are estimated at $24 million total, which might change as they go into the 2nd phase of the design process. The project is currently on time and on budget, as per the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation. 

The North Shore convoy schedule has been slightly adjusted to accommodate the opening of public schools on the island. Starting August 4, the Wednesday afternoon public access schedule for Hanalei Hill is shifting to 30 minutes earlier.
