Jim Karlovsky

The Historic Hanalei Bridge is currently stated to be in fair condition, however it's showing signs of aging, corrosion and decay. Thus, the DOT is putting out a bid for repairs and improvement with an estimated cost of between $5 million and $10 million. Constructed in 1912, it has undergone repairs and rehabs in 1934, 1967, 1973, 1980, and most recently in 2003. This bridge is crucial to everybody beyond Princeville and has served as a gateway to the communities of Hanalei, Wainiha and Ha‘ena.

The supposed plan is to basically refurbishing the timber deck, replacing damaged tension rods, rust-mitigation, and cleaning and painting the entire structure to prevent future corrosion. A temporary 175ft one-lane bypass bridge will be constructed, to handle traffic flow while they conduct the repairs. The estimated timeframe from start to finish is stated to be roughly 7 months or 180 working days and the projected start is said to be sometime in the fall of this year.

Other stated projects in the area are planned for the future are, stabilizing the Kuhio Highway shoulder by hardening a 300-foot-long section of the Hanalei River bank adjacent to the highway. This project is projected to be put out for bid in winter 2023 at an estimated cost of $1 million to $5 million.
