Kaua'i's illegal vacation rental market has majorly decreased since the county's collaboration with online booking agencies back in August of 2020. It's been said that the illegal vacation rentals on Kaua‘i have gone from roughly 1,500 in 2017 to less than 50. Which is due to the partnerships with Airbnb and Vbro that put illegal operations on notice in August 2020, not allowing operators to upload their rentals without proper tax-map identification.
The partnership made in June of 2020 between the county, Airbnb and Expedia, which owns Vrbo, was the first of its kind in the Hawaii, and helped the county track and regulate vacation rentals while allowing compliant property owners to continue to operate. The agreements require Vbro and Airbnb to also provide monthly reports of all properties on their sites and remove listings that county staff identify as illegal. This partnership has drastically curtailed illegal rentals without draining valuable county resources.
