Kauai County approves bill to create more EV charging stations

Jim Karlovsky

With electric cars becoming more common on Kauai, the County Council has passed Bill No. 2877. This bill requires new parking lots with more than 100 parking spaces to install 5% of their stalls with an EV charging systems.

A study has projected that the global electric vehicle market size and purchases will grow in the coming future. Electric vehicles are projected to hit 10 percent of global sales by 2025, growing to 28 percent in 2030 and 58 percent by 2040.

Electric cars tend to be more expensive than traditional vehicles, due to the high battery costs. Estimated to be around $18K more expensive on average as stated on a report done recently. However these numbers are being brought down by tax breaks. The federal government is aiming to incentivize the use of electric cars by expanding a $7,500 tax credit on the purchase of electric vehicles through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
