Beat of Hawaii reports that Lihue Airport (LIH) remains the only airport in the United States that has yet to comply with certain FAA requirements - requirements that have existed for 15 years. In 2023, the requisite work was approved, and now it appears that the physical work will commence late this month (July 2024).
Among the changes is the need to shift the runway approximately 1,000 feet from its current location, to exist further from the ocean than it's current location (currently only 300 feet from the ocean). Nightly closures are planned to commence on July 29, 2024, during the hours of 11pm and 8am, to minimize impact on current flight plan schedules.
Another $100M+ project remains planned for the airport later in 2024 and beyond.
