The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has provided notice that there will be single-lane traffic on Kuhio Highway (560) between Princeville and Hanalei on the Hanalei Grade above the Hanalei River Bridge starting on January 3rd and continuing through January 28th. This restricted traffic flow will occur seven days per week between 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday and 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Sundays. Traffic will alternate in each direction every 30-minutes.
This traffic alteration is following the successful installation of the hillside stabilizing mesh during the month of December. HDOT is accelerating the work schedule for the slope stabilization project to a seven day per week schedule to allow the contractor to complete the project prior to the expiration of the Governor’s Emergency Proclamation on January 28th, 2020.
All the work is weather permitting. Should the scheduled work be canceled or modified, notice will go out via HDOT’s social media accounts and notification system. HDOT extends a “mahalo for your kokua” to travelers as they make the Hanalei Grade more resilient to future weather events. This is yet another after-effect of the 100-year storm event that occurred on April 15, 2018.
