Haena

Enchanting secluded community with beautiful scenery.

Welcome to Haena

Winding mountain roads and single-land bridges lead to the isolated North Shore Kauai community of Haena. The distinctive jagged peaks of Mount Makana also known as Bali Hai and tropical jungle provide a dramatic backdrop for the golden sands and azure waters of Makana or Tunnels Haena Beach Park. Kauai’s famous NaPali trail at Ke'e Beach Park leads into the sprawling wilderness to Haena’s southeast. Haena is a magical place steeped in mystery and legend. Stories are told of Haena’s former chieftains and long-held independence from the rest of Kauai, and some claim the Waikapalae wet cave was created by Hawaiian fire goddess Pele.

Homes within remote Haena offer island living at its most serene. Panoramic views take in sweeping ocean vistas, waterfalls, and jungle canopy. Expect spacious beachfront properties with island-style design inside and out. From stylish vacation rentals to rustic cottages to beachfront estates, Haena’s real estate is as special as the spectacular scenery.

People & Lifestyle

Few places in the world feel as idyllic as Haena, with stunning beaches and an awe-inspiring landscape. Quiet and private, Haena’s residents and visitors fall in love with a community that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Opakapaka Grill and Bar is the only North Shore restaurant located directly on the oceanfront. Sip ice-cold margaritas and Lumahai Tai's and dine on exquisite fresh seafood while taking in the incomparable scenery.

Wainha General Store has served the community since 1975. Along with all the beach supplies you’ll need to enjoy Haena’s golden sands, the store holds the unique distinction of serving the westernmost cold beers and ice creams in the entire United States.

Things to Do

Haena’s beaches and scenic viewpoints are among the best in the world. The stream-bisected sands of Haena Beach Park is great for swimming and snorkeling in calm conditions. In winter, some of Hawaii’s most skilled surfers descend on Haena to ride its exceptionally large waves. The reef-protected waters of Ke'e State Beach Park are among Kauai’s calmest, making it a perfect place to  snorkel and swim. The ironwood and palm tree-fringed Tunnels Makua Beach takes its name from the many underwater caverns that make it a scuba diving and snorkeling wonderland.

The 11-mile Kalalau Trail traverses five valleys along the oceanfront stretch between Ke'e Beach and Kalalau Beach. The waters at Wainiha Bay Park and Kepuhi Point are less friendly to swimmers, but their quietness, jungle-framed sands, and captivating views make them some of the best places to ocean watch.
