Kilauea

Rural agricultural community with outstanding beaches.

Welcome to Kilauea

Located near the eastern edge of Kauai’s northern shore, Kilauea is a rural community surrounded by lush vegetation. It is one of North Shore’s most historically rich communities, with a number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Kilauea’s real estate includes plantation cottages in Kilauea Town, breathtaking multi-acre estates perched above Kauapea or Secret's beach, enchanting tropical hideaways, and verdant valley rim lots. The larger lots offer an abundance of land, whether you’re looking to grow your own organic crops or simply enjoy the peacefulness of living in your own private haven. The community’s diverse topography means homes enjoy views over rivers, waterfalls, and the shimmering ocean.

People & Lifestyle

Kilauea’s rural vibe, gorgeous greenery, and agricultural tracts combined with the neighborhood cluster around central Kilauea create a unique small town feel. There is a feeling of timelessness to Kilauea, with many local families having lived here for generations. Kilauea was once home to Brewer Sugar Company and Guava Kai, the world’s largest guava plantation, and much of the population is comprised of descendants of former workers and their families.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

The town’s commercial district has grown considerably in recent years as Kilauea Lighthouse Village has provided space for new businesses. Housed in a charming old cottage, Kilauea Fish Market boasts a wonderful selection of fresh, Hawaiian-style seafood--including what is arguably Kauai’s best ahi tuna wrap. Great creative seafood is also offered at Sushi Girl Kauai, which serves makai rolls, poke bowls, and sushi burritos.

With delicious food and coffee, Kilauea Bakery & Pizza is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Coffee lovers will also want to check out Trilogy, known for its artisanal espresso blends and local teas. Kauai Juice Co. uses scrumptious local fruits for its cold-pressed drinks, and The Healthy Hut Market & Café is both a great grocery store and another fine spot for coffee and locally-sourced juices.

In terms of entertainment, The Bistro brings together fantastic European-Hawaiian fusion cuisine and live performances in a plantation-style open courtyard and for a Kauai-style wine bar, don't miss the salads and flatbreads at Palate. When it comes to groceries, the weekly Kilauea Sunshine Market offers a wide selection of fresh island produce.

Things to Do

Kilauea boasts many options for enjoying its glorious climate and scenery. Anaina Hou Community Park has a children’s playground, skate park, lush gardens, and a mini golf course. The amazing plant life and sculptures at Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens combines human creativity with nature’s splendor.

Local beaches include tree-lined surf spot Kalihiwai Beach, rugged and dramatic "Kahili" or Rock Quarry Kahili Quarry Beach, and incredibly spacious and secluded Kauapea or Secret Beach. The wildlife refuge surrounding historic Kilauea Lighthouse is a fantastic place to see unique variety of bird species and catch a glimpse of spinner dolphins, humpback whales, and sea turtles.
